It has been a long while since we’ve had the time to visit a crop circle and enjoy the experience. It’s what being a croppie really should be all about.

So, on a hot summer’s afternoon we set off for Roundway Down, made our way down the horrendously bumpy byway and into the large field of wheat holding the ‘cosmic chicken’ formation.

As is becoming the norm here, I’m not going to spend paragraphs writing up what we experienced and witnessed. However, I will share a few thoughts that may or may not make any sense: reckless drone pilots, alien abductee posing for photographs, memories of prior visits, a creep, croppies cutting out wheat plants to do God knows what with them, a polite goth with a coffin shaped bag, a pothole, ‘Where is the circle, please?’ Happy people.

Happy people? There really aren’t enough of them on the crop circle scene these days, yet when we left the formation we realised that we had encountered some extremely chirpy people. They were grateful that they had a crop circle to visit and experience. They were grateful that nobody had publicly claimed responsibility for making the formation. They were still able to find pleasure and wonder in a phenomenon that attracts so many noisy, troubled, exceedingly unhappy and bitter people squabbling to be important, look knowledgeable and appear relevant.

But, really, when you step back inside a crop circle you remember what it has always been about: hot afternoons, quiet, feeling part of something bigger, beautiful rural locations on the downs. If you don’t leave asking ‘who?’ that isn’t a problem. The ‘why?’ and ‘how?’ are much more important.
